Teaching "Drop It": The Essential Toy Command
"Drop it" might be the single most important command for any dog that plays with toys. It keeps games flowing, prevents resource guarding, and could save your dog's life if they pick up something dangerous.
The Foundation: Trading, Not Taking
Never pry objects from your dog's mouth — that teaches them to grip harder. Instead, teach dropping as a trade: release what you have, get something better.
Phase 1: The Easy Trade (Days 1-7)
Give your dog a moderate toy like our Coffee Cup Plush Dog Toy. Present a high-value treat at their nose. Mark the moment the toy drops. Immediately return the toy. Don't say "drop it" yet.
Phase 2: Adding the Cue (Days 7-14)
Say "drop it" just BEFORE presenting the treat. Over repetitions, your dog drops on the verbal cue alone.
Phase 3: Increasing Value (Days 14-28)
Practice with progressively more valued toys — up to their favorite Champagne Bottle Plush Dog Toy. Increase treat value as needed.
The "Drop It" Game
Tug for 5-10 seconds with a Steak toy. Say "drop it" and freeze. When they release, restart the game. The reward for dropping IS more play — powerful because it counters the fear that fun ends.
Multiple Toys Help
Having attractive alternatives makes trades natural. Wave a Pawfume toy while your dog has a Barkin Bag — PAWTY's variety means each trade feels like an upgrade.
